Where To Begin

Starting your journey in Christianity can feel overwhelming, but take comfort in knowing you’re not alone.  Many of us didn’t grow up in church,  or found God later in life, so I can totally understand what it’s like to take those early steps. The good news is that you don’t have to navigate this path by yourself.  Surrounding yourself with a supportive community of believers can provide encouragement, guidance, and a sense of belonging.  How do you do that when you don't know anyone?  That's a question I once asked myself too.  Some simple ways to connect with others who share your faith might include visiting a local church, joining a Bible study group, or joining faith-based groups online through social media.  Taking these steps can help you grow spiritually, create new friendships, and find answers to any questions you might have along the way.  Remember, it’s all about progress, not perfection—one step at a time.

Start with Relationship, Not Religion

Christianity isn’t about ticking boxes — it’s about truly knowing Jesus personally and building a relationship with Him.   I found the easiest way to start is just by  simply talking to Him.  I do this all the time, but I especially do this whenever I'm in the car, it probably just looks like on the phone! But choose a time and place that works best for you.  I share everything with Him about my day, my worries, my hopes, and everything I'm grateful for.   He is always there and always listens with an open heart.

Read the Bible, Slowly and Simply

You don’t have to power through the whole Bible in a week—take it slow!  Maybe start with the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John.  There are lots of amazing stories about the life and teachings of Jesus.  But before you dive in, just take a moment to ask God to help you get a better understanding of it.  Go at your own pace and let the words sink in.  Even a few verses a day can make a big difference.

I read the bible all the time now, but when I first started I didn't have a clue, I actually thought, "no, I need someone to read this to me and explain it in detail" If this sounds like you, there are many podcasts and YouTube channels that make the Bible super easy to understand, and you can follow along with your own bible.  Oh, and if you’re just starting out, you might be best to pick a translation that’s easy to read.   I recommend the NLT (New Living Translation), NIV (New International Version), or ESV (English Standard Version). They keep things simple and straightforward!

Final note - Remember It’s Okay to Be New or Returning

You’re learning, we are only human, and God delights in that.  Every small step you take toward Him matters.

Remember, the journey of faith is not about perfection but about progress.  God celebrates your willingness to grow and welcomes every effort you make to seek Him.  Even in moments of doubt or struggle, He is near, guiding you with patience and love.  Take heart in knowing that every moment spent drawing closer to Him shapes you into the person you are meant to be.
